From Image to Abstraction : Paintings by William Willoughby
Artist Statement: I view my paintings mostly as landscapes, including the ones that are painted as nonobjective abstracts.
To begin a scene, I start applying watercolour or acrylic paint directly on the surface without any guidelines, keeping in mind the final overall composition.
My wire sculptures are always of animals or trees and generally have a somewhat whimsical aspect to them.
The most satisfying outcome of working with wire is the fact that the viewer is able to see the form, and at the same time see through it.
Biography: My career was in tax administration as an auditor, supervisor, and commodity tax specialist, initially as a government employee and ultimately as a self-employed tax recovery specialist for private industry.
The foray into the art scene didn't come into play until retirement was close at hand. My wife played an important role by encouraging me to take art courses at the Haliburton School of Fine Art. I attended one-week courses over many years in subjects such as: painting in both acrylic and watercolour; sculpting in wire; cement; clay and iron, and glass blowing. I have also taken painting classes locally in Whitby and Cobourg.
Shows: In 2018 and 2022, I had art shows at the business premises of Edward Jones located in downtown Cobourg. Northumberland Arts gallery and shop, Port Hope, March 6 to April 20, 2025

Pete Doherty - Northumberland
In Northumberland, boxing photographer Pete Doherty reassembles the fragments of a life suddenly altered by illness and loss.
After the death of both his parents–his father from a stroke and, within a year, his mother from breast cancer–he realized an invisible line had been drawn that represented before and after; old life, new life; the known world and the unknown world. The only way for him to make sense of this new existence was by reconstructing the pieces of his life, bringing all the aspects of his community together as a whole.
Renowned for his photographs of boxing, Doherty used his access as a participant to photograph fellow boxers in various stages of their amateur and professional careers. Offering an insider’s perspective, his intimate portraits and action shots, made during training sessions and bouts, create a inclusive view of that sport. Doherty has always used a very linear, more traditional approach in sequencing his photographs in his monograph book and solo exhibitions. This project, Northumberland, is a distinctly different series, almost like chapters or sentences in a book, that together create a comprehensive, poetic, and non-linear form. With this series, he, in some way, continues a conversation with his parents, as he tries to understand how to photograph grief and loss, how to not romanticize, exploit or trivialize it.
In bringing these seemingly disparate (in some cases) images together, he creates an aesthetic that invokes questions, and gestures or realignment (past/present/future) and creates a comprehensive but challenging body of work that depicts being alive in a world where loves ones are suddenly gone. His colour and B&W photographs illustrate the spaces we inhabit and enliven personal artifacts that serve to illustrate lives lived. His approach enables viewers time to reflect on their personal experiences with aging, eldercare, and grief.

Greg McHarg - The Shape of Space
The Shape of Space explores Greg McHarg’s innovative use of cutouts and repetition, transforming cardboard into a study of form, void, and rhythm. Through precise cuts and deliberate patterns, McHarg redefines the relationship between material and absence, allowing space itself to take shape within his compositions.
The interplay of light and shadow, solid and void, gives each piece a dynamic presence, shifting as the viewer moves. The corrugated layers of cardboard add texture and depth, emphasizing the contrast between structure and fragility. By using an everyday material, McHarg elevates the ordinary, inviting contemplation on how space is both defined and disrupted.
In The Shape of Space, the repetition of forms creates a visual cadence, echoing natural rhythms and architectural patterns. This exhibition challenges viewers to consider not just what is present, but what is missing –and how the negative space carved away is just as vital as the material that remains.

SPEAKERS MARG GRAHAM AND DIANNE COSWAY
Between 1869 and 1948 over 100,000 children of all ages were brought to Canadian shores from the UK. These children were not brought to Canada for love or protection, they were sent to work on Canadian farms and in Canadian households. This is a significant part of the history of Canada and the United Kingdom, yet it is still vastly unknown.

Dan Hill - is an international music industry legend and one of Canada’s most distinguished, authentic, and multi-talented artists: Grammy-winner, five time-Juno Award winner, Harold Moon Award, and inducted into the venerated Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame Award . Dan is known for his heartfelt sensibility on two massive international hits, Sometimes When We Touch, recognized as one of the Top 100 Songs of the Century and one of Top 100 Most Played Songs of All Time, and Can’t We Try, which spent 29 weeks on Billboard charts . Dan has produced hit songs for Celine Dion and George Benson, with his compositions being recorded by artists such as Britney Spears, Rod Stewart, The Backstreet Boys, Tina Turner, Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, and many more His voice is “smooth softness, with a light warmth,” perfectly describing both his original and recent works that fans still gather to enjoy today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jVQseLIt8Q
Andy Kim - "I’m excited to share the stage with my dear friend, the multitalented Dan Hill."
In 1969, Andy co-wrote Sugar Sugar - his first Billboard #1 hit. In 1974, Andy wrote a new song called “Rock Me Gently” and absolutely no one wanted to produce it. Andy loved the song, and he wouldn't take no for an answer. He formed his own record company, called !CE, and produced the record on his own. When it was released, “Rock Me Gently” went straight to #1 on the Billboard charts and it remained on the charts for a staggering 4 months. This second #1 Billboard song added to Andy's international success. In 2004, Andy’s collaboration with Ed Robertson of The Barenaked Ladies’ “I Forgot To Mention” gave him another Top 10, and Andy was voted by Canadian Music Week as the Best Solo Indie Artist of the Year.
A true Canadian son, Andy has had 9 top 40 Billboard hits including Baby I Love You. He was recently honoured with the appointment to the Order of Canada. He has been awarded the country’s top industry honours including a Juno award, the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame and a star on Canada’s Walk Of Fame. Andy is a member of Songwriters Hall of Fame, was inducted into Billboard's Hit Parade Hall of Fame, and in 2017, for the 2nd time in their 70-year history, SOCAN honoured Andy with their Cultural Impact Award. Over his epic career, Andy has sold over 30 million records, and has over half a billion streams on Spotify and YouTube.

R. H. Thomson was born on September 24, 1947, in Richmond Hill, Ontario. He studied at the University of Toronto and the National Theatre School.[2] His play The Lost Boys was staged at the Great Canadian Theatre Company in March 2000 at Tarragon Theatre, and at Canadian Stage in February 2002. He has also hosted programming for CBC Radio and CBC Television. Thomson has portrayed a number of historical figures including Samuel Lount, Edsel Ford, Frederick Banting, Duncan Campbell Scott, Mitchell Sharp, and James Cross. In 2010, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada.[3] In May 2015 Thomson received a Governor General's Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement. Eric Peterson performed in his honour at the gala celebrating the laureates at the National Arts Centre.[4] Thomson has had a long-standing interest in Canada's military and war veterans. In 1995 he narrated a 3-part documentary series about Canada's involvement in international conflicts. On the 90th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, in which nearly 3,600 Canadians died, he co-created, with lighting designer Martin Conboy, a commemoration in which the name of each fallen soldier was projected onto the National War Memorial. The following year in 2009, he and Conboy undertook an ambitious project to project the names of the more than 68,000 Canadians who died in World War I onto famous monuments across the country, titled The World Remembers-Le Monde se Souvient. Projections occurred during the night. In 2010, the Government of Canada honoured Thomson for this effort with a Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation.[6] Theatre, Film, TV series: Road to Avonlea, (Jasper Dale) 1990-1996 Charlie Grant’s War, (Charlie Grant), 1985 Host of CBC TV’s Man Alive, (1996 -2001) Anne with an E (Mathew Cuthbertson), 2017-2019 Murdock Mysteries, 2024

Ron James - Not Nearly Done Yet!
With twenty-five years spent barrelling down endless strips of asphalt from coast to coast, RON JAMES, our nation's number one road warrior and newly minted senior citizen, is Not Nearly Done Yet! With his trademark poetically charged alliterative rants, performed with razor sharp timing, this award-winning comedian and best-selling author takes audiences on a marathon roller coaster ride in the language of laughs, charting a course through a politically polarized world out of whack. From the micro to macro, he tackles everything from the dating woes of Baby Boomers, embattled public health care, aging parents, food fads, exercise addiction, nostalgia, information overload, tropical vacations gone awry, New Age divas, homelessness crisis, climate change, corporate monopolies and gambling ads in hockey, to the rise of AI's robot revolution. The comedian the Globe and Mail called, ‘a man of a million words and a million laughs', contemplates what really matters most in a culture beset by runaway consumption… and it is us. The preservation of humanity's humanity. ‘Everything else is just a spoiler on a Dodge Neon'.

This classic story from a 1922 novel by Elizabeth von Arnim was adapted as a film in 1991 and was brought to the stage in 2003.
Feeling lost in the shadows of marriage and forgotten in the rush of 1920s post-war society, two London housewives pool their savings to rent a villa in Italy for a ladies-only holiday away, reluctantly recruiting a pair of difficult upper-class women to share the cost and the experience.
Together under the Mediterranean sun, the four women clash, and then being to bond and bloom – until men once again upset the balance.
This heart-warming romantic comedy is for those who delight in rewarding stories with memorable characters.

WOMEN MAKE FILM gives us a guided tour of the art and craft of the movies. Two Episodes are being presented at this time, as follows:

FIREHALL THEATRE
A Doll's House, Part 2 by Lucas Hnath Directed By BILL WALKER
Produced By KAYE TORRIE
In the final scene of Ibsen's 1879 ground-breaking masterwork, Nora Helmer makes the shocking decision to leave her husband and children and being a life on her own.
In A Doll's House, Part 2, many years have passed since that climactic exit when Nora slammed the door on everything in her life. Now, there's a knock on that same door. Nora has returned.
This riveting sequel, with modern language in a classical period setting, uses humour and suspense while examining serious themes such as marriage, love, gender inequality and freedom. If you are looking for a play that wrestles with meaningful concepts in a small, intimate setting, then look no further.

Embracing the Crone
Location: Mystic Avenue Yoga & Wellness Studio, 24 King St. E. Colborne
JThroughout history, the feminine journey has been described through the sacred cycle of Maiden, Mother, and Crone—each phase carrying its own wisdom and gifts.
The Maiden is youth, discovery, and new beginnings. She embodies curiosity, independence, and potential.
The Mother is creation, nurturing, and growth—whether through raising children, birthing projects, or tending to the world with love and care.
The Crone is wisdom, transformation, and deep inner knowing. She is the elder, the seer, the woman who has walked through life’s challenges and emerged with clarity and strength.
This workshop is a celebration of the Crone, honouring the unique power and wisdom that comes with midlife and beyond. As we step into this phase, we are invited to embrace our intuition, release old roles, and claim the sovereignty of our authentic selves. The Crone is not just about aging—she is about living with depth, truth, and power.
Who is this for?
This gathering is for women who are stepping into or already embodying the Crone phase—whether through menopause, aging, or simply a shift into a deeper wisdom. It is a space to honour the transitions of midlife and beyond, to reflect on the gifts of experience, and to claim the power of the Wise Woman within.
While the Crone’s wisdom is universal, this space is specifically held for women in midlife and later years who wish to explore, embrace, and celebrate this phase of life. If you are drawn to this transition, seeking guidance, or ready to stand fully in your truth, you are welcome here.
What to Expect:
Explore the Crone’s meaning through myth and storytelling
Reflect on the gifts of aging, wisdom, and personal transformation
Engage in a guided meditation to connect with your inner Crone
Participate in ritual and creative expression
Share in a supportive, sacred space with other Wise Women
Come as you are—whether you are embracing, resisting, or simply curious about this phase. This is a space for reverence, renewal, and deep connection with the Wise Woman within.
