How do you do that?

Have you ever wondered how an abstract painting is created? Or questioned the “meaning” of abstract art? Now’s your chance to find out. Observe part of the process Pamela Tate uses to create her non-representational mixed media pieces. Learn what inspires her, what the thought process is behind her current work and see some of the tools of her trade in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Besides a demonstration, there will be lots of opportunity to ask questions.

Pamela Tate started out as a dancer and her love of movement is evident in the visual art she now creates. Using a variety of tools and inspired by many different experiences, her work is typically energetic and bold. Her curious nature and love of a good challenge informs all of her work.

A Collection Built on Relationships

September 30, 2024 to February 28, 2025

Reception: Saturday, October 5 from 1 PM – 3 PM

Curated by Felicity Pope and Olinda Casimiro

The idea for this exhibition emerged as an effort to inform our community about Inuit culture. The objects in the Marsh Collection are a window into a crucial point in Inuit history and art history, a period of profound cultural change, yet since they arrived at the AGN in 1976, they had never been thoroughly researched. In 2021, working alongside Felicity Pope, co-curator of this exhibition, we began to ask what it would take to bring these objects to the AGN community.

Over the next three years, Felicity spearheaded extensive research into the history of the Marsh Collection and the historical context in which it was assembled, re-connecting these works to their communities of origin and, where possible, to the names of the artists who made them. We consulted with Isabelle Avingaq Choquette, Curator at Avataq Cultural Institute, Montreal, to gain a better understanding of their materials, preservation, and the contemporary learnings that inform their presentation in the exhibition and here, in this catalogue.

In 2015, the Canadian Museums Association (CMA) was named in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action #67, calling on galleries and museums to address their colonial origins and bring their policies and practices into alignment with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). This included the delivery of a report, Moved to Action: Activating UNDRIP in Canadian Museums, completed in 2022, that includes recommendations that will guide museums and galleries across the country as we work towards reconciliation.

Conceived the same year as Governor General Mary Simon became the first Indigenous person to hold the position in Canada, A Collection Built on Relationships seeks to contribute to this work by opening important discussions about the AGN’s role in Canada’s colonial history. This exhibition and this catalogue provide us with an opportunity to pause, reflect, and contemplate works of art that continue to inform the fabric of our cultural heritage.

The Bowie Lives: A Bowie Spectacular

The Bowie Lives: A Bowie Spectacular

The Bowie Lives is excited to continue their run of theatres in 2024, with the addition of new songs and costumes, this "Bowie Spectacular" continues to excite audiences whenever they play.

Perhaps this email from an audience member best sums it up… "Saw the show last night in Midland and was blown away. Was a little apprehensive at first as I have been a Bowie fan since I was a teen and i was concerned the band may not do the songs justice. i was overwhelmingly thrilled at what I heard and saw, from the first note I was hooked. The biggest take away is you can tell the lead singer is truly a devoted fan himself. Loved the way you honoured David Bowie. Hope to see you in Collingwood"

The industry thinks so too…

"5 Stars! Unbelievable! I could have watched them for two more hours!" says Richard Crouse, Host of CTV PopLife. “By far, the best & coolest Bowie Tribute I’ve seen!” says Sam Grosso, Cadillac Productions. "As close as it gets!" says MusikMirage.com

They're all talking about the "The Bowie Lives" Canada's Most Spectacular Tribute to David Bowie! Michael Bell is an award-winning vocalist who channels the sound and styles of David Bowie, and with the help of an all-star band, multi-media, theatre and costumes, he has captured the imagination of fans young and old.

Michael discovered Bowie as a teen and performed songs with a number of his early bands. By the 80's his first theatrical production "ChangesAllBowie" toured the "A circuit" before hanging up his "Ziggy" in the early '90s. Decades passed. After David's untimely death on January 10, 2016, Michael's calling returned; his calling to honor the man who helped shape his life. Together with musical director Michael Beauclerc, they began auditioning players to fill out a band capable of performing some of Rock's most challenging material. The Bowie Lives bring all the hits to the stage, from Space Oddity to Lazarus, and everything in between.

The Bowie Lives PRE-SHOW includes the Bowie Bazaar; T-shirts, collectibles, LP's and DVDs and more. Come in costume dressed as your favourite David, or wear your favourite swag and be rewarded! Don't forget to grab a button!

Michael is also the subject of an upcoming documentary film “Being David Bowie” and an upcoming web-series "The Bowie Lives."

Guided Nature Tour with Rick Beaver

We are thrilled to announce our next Cherishing Our Planet event guided by Rick Beaver of Alderville First Nation.

There is something magical about the date at which the calendar informs us that one season ends and another begins. Take the 20th – 21st of September for instance, the date of the year’s autumn beginning. To be sure, the daylight hours have been lessening since late June and will continue to due so until the first day of winter in December. Come join us to witness the Monarch butterfly migration over the field of asters and goldenrods, the mounting restlessness of migratory bird flocks, precocious colouring of deciduous shrubs and trees and the often-unmistakable reds, oranges and yellows of ripening fruits. Seeds, the plants’ hedge on the future, are everywhere – and some may even have begun to sprout already. The segue to autumn has begun.

Your Guide is Rick Beaver. Rick is an internationally recognized Mississauga Ojibway elder, artist and ecologist from Alderville First Nation in Ontario. His diverse involvements have included consultations in aboriginal tourism, the arts, cultural history and ecosystem restoration and Species at Risk recovery efforts. He has been an ecology tour guide both in Canada and Mexico and host for “Spirit Walks”, an aboriginal tourism initiative for First Nation communities. In past years, he was as a member of the design team for The Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough, Ontario and served as the research and restoration coordinator for Alderville First Nation’s Black Oak Savanna for many years.

Your host is Leslie Fell, founder and Chair of Living Ways Foundation.

This event will be held at 2429 County Road 25, Castleton, Ontario. The land features over 100 acres of tranquility for you to rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul in rolling hills, peaceful trails, gardens, forest, and more.

Note that hiking difficulty is mild to moderate and will involve climbing some slopes. If you are a distance away, you are welcome to book accommodations on site (cabin or a room in the farmhouse) by booking through Fells Meadows www.fellsmeadows.com.

Should the day be one of very heavy rain, the rain date is Sunday, October 6th. Ticket holders will be informed at least a day prior to October 5th if we are going with the rain date.

Only 15 tickets will be sold. The price includes a nature walk, discussion circle and lights snacks and refreshments. We suggest waterproof hiking footwear and clothing and to bring water in a reusable container.

Opening Reception: A Collection Built on Relationships

The Art Gallery of Northumberland (AGN) warmly invites you to the opening reception of an exhibition celebrating the historic appointment of Mary Simon, Canada's first Indigenous Governor General, in 2021. This exhibition showcases Inuit carvings, sculptures, and materials from 1900 to 1970, offering a glimpse into the artistic expressions and lived experiences of the Inuit people during a period of rapid cultural change. These pieces, sourced from communities across the Inuit Nunangat (Inuit Homeland), are presented alongside a map reflecting the land treaties between the Crown and the Inuit, using their original Inuktut place names as part of the ongoing process of decolonization. Through this exhibit, we honour not only the artistic legacy of the Inuit but also the resilience of their culture in the face of traders, missionaries, and Canadian government officials.

Chicago Transit Canada

*Back by popular demand after a sold-out show last June.

Chicago Transit: There are a lot of bands doing a tribute to the band Chicago, but back in the early 90’s, when Powerhouse decided to put together their Chicago Transit tribute act, they were the first in the world to do so. And they remain today as the longest running Chicago tribute band and the only one to carry four lead vocalists, just as the band Chicago does.

The bands' 5 singers, 4 of which are lead singers, the 3-piece horn section and the 5 piece rhythm section, made this show a natural for the band - even getting credit from the band Chicago themselves, back in the 90’s. In twenty-five years, the band, based in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada has performed their show at Festivals, Theatres, Casinos and various other venues from as far east as the Gatineau Hills in Quebec to the USA Midwest - including Chicago, Illinois, itself.

The band, with its three piece horn section, five piece rhythm section and four lead vocalists is able to cover all the Chicago material from the early horn dominant classics like ‘Make Me Smile’, ’25 or 6 to 4’ and ‘Saturday in the Park’ to the later, softer, keyboard-oriented ballads like ‘If You Leave Me Now’. If you like Chicago, you’ll love Chicago Transit!

Tickets are $48 plus hst and service fee and available at the Concert Hall Box Office: 855-372-2210.

After All These Years: The Music of Daryl Stogryn

Daryl Stogryn graduated from Berklee College of Music in 1981 with an Honors Diploma in Jazz Composition and Arranging. A winner of Berklee’s Woody Herman Jazz Masters award for outstanding contributions to the Berklee Performance Series, Daryl led a 19-piece band as primary composer in Boston for 3 years. He studied jazz composition under Michael Gibbs, Herb Pomeroy, Phil Wilson, and Greg Hopkins, among others. After returning to Canada, Daryl worked as a freelance composer and led an 18-piece rehearsal band in Toronto for 2 years, providing opportunities for composers to test their music. From 1983 to the early 90’s, Daryl was a regular adjudicator and clinician for Musicfest Canada and related music festivals. He had numerous commissions from bands preparing for competition both nationally and internationally. Growing up in Sarnia, Daryl had many opportunities to connect with some of the big band greats through the Lambton College Big Band Series in the 1970’s. He was able to spend time with great band leaders like Woody Herman, Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Stan Kenton, and Maynard Ferguson. Hanging out at open rehearsals and simply being present with these giants of the big band world would be an inspiration for life. It was Stan Kenton that recommended he apply to Berklee. In 1989 Daryl began working on behalf of struggling youth in his local area. In the early 1990’s, Daryl formally left the music industry to focus exclusively on the needs of young people. Now, approaching retirement, friends and former music colleagues have encouraged him to dust of the music chops and write again. This is the first concert featuring Daryl’s music in over 30 years. Any proceeds from this event will be donated to Northumberland Youth Unlimited and the Brighton Food Bank.

The Band:

Mike Wark - Tenor Sax, doubles, and band leader.

Kurt Lund - Alto Sax, doubles.

Brian O’Kane - Trumpet/Flugel Horn

Christian Overton - Trombone

Anthony D’Alessandro - Piano

Nick Arseneau - Upright and Electric Bass

Robin Claxton - Drums
