From Image to Abstraction : Paintings by William Willoughby

  • Northumberland Arts Gallery and Shop 8 Queen Street Port Hope, ON, L1A 2Y7 Canada (map)

Artist Statement: I view my paintings mostly as landscapes, including the ones that are painted as nonobjective abstracts.

To begin a scene, I start applying watercolour or acrylic paint directly on the surface without any guidelines, keeping in mind the final overall composition.

My wire sculptures are always of animals or trees and generally have a somewhat whimsical aspect to them.

The most satisfying outcome of working with wire is the fact that the viewer is able to see the form, and at the same time see through it.

Biography: My career was in tax administration as an auditor, supervisor, and commodity tax specialist, initially as a government employee and ultimately as a self-employed tax recovery specialist for private industry.
The foray into the art scene didn't come into play until retirement was close at hand. My wife played an important role by encouraging me to take art courses at the Haliburton School of Fine Art. I attended one-week courses over many years in subjects such as: painting in both acrylic and watercolour; sculpting in wire; cement; clay and iron, and glass blowing. I have also taken painting classes locally in Whitby and Cobourg.
Shows: In 2018 and 2022, I had art shows at the business premises of Edward Jones located in downtown Cobourg. Northumberland Arts gallery and shop, Port Hope, March 6 to April 20, 2025
