The Art Gallery of Northumberland (AGN) warmly invites you to the opening reception of an exhibition celebrating the historic appointment of Mary Simon, Canada's first Indigenous Governor General, in 2021. This exhibition showcases Inuit carvings, sculptures, and materials from 1900 to 1970, offering a glimpse into the artistic expressions and lived experiences of the Inuit people during a period of rapid cultural change. These pieces, sourced from communities across the Inuit Nunangat (Inuit Homeland), are presented alongside a map reflecting the land treaties between the Crown and the Inuit, using their original Inuktut place names as part of the ongoing process of decolonization. Through this exhibit, we honour not only the artistic legacy of the Inuit but also the resilience of their culture in the face of traders, missionaries, and Canadian government officials.
